Varicose veins are swollen and enlarged veins that are usually purple or a dark blue colour. They occur when the vein enlarges and becomes filled over capacity with blood and the valve that causes the blood to flow in one direction, stops working. This results in blood pooling in one spot. They appear to be swollen and are raised against the skin. Varicose veins appear mainly in the lower half of the body – particularly along the calves.

Varicose veins usually occur in women and are more common during pregnancy and menopause. They also tend to occur if the individual is obese or stand for long periods of time. Generally, varicose veins usually manifest due to poor lifestyle choices such as smoking, drinking and eating oily and fatty foods. Taking the time and making the effort to watch your diet will prevent the continuous onset of varicose veins. Additionally, moving around and not standing or sitting for too long will keep the blood flowing smoothly and prevent the valves in our vessels from going bust.
However, if it is too late for preventive measures, there are a few high-tech options available for those who desperately want to get rid of these diseased veins. Varicose veins are usually unsightly and up until a few years ago, the only way to completely get rid of them was through a surgical process called vein stripping. However, new advances in science has made for cutting edge varicose veins removal without surgery now available. Check out this new vein removal technique here!
The Use of Radio Waves
First, anaesthesia mixed with fluid is injected into the varicose vein to make the procedure relatively painless and also to draw out the blood from the vein. The lumen – which is the inside of the vein – is heated up with the use of radio waves. This causes the hardened collagen in the walls of the varicose vein to shrink, collapse and get promptly re-absorbed by the body. In this way, the varicose vein and its appearance, ceases to exist.
Endovenous Laser
This is the latest revolutionary, FDA-approved solution to varicose veins. The whole procedure takes a short 30-minutes and most patients go in for it during their lunch breaks and then return to work on the same day. Relatively painless and with no scarring, this ground-breaking treatment is sure to encourage varicose vein removal.
First, the patient is given a local anaesthetic. Using ultrasound as a guiding point, an extremely thin optic fibre is slipped into the varicose vein using a needle. Once the needle is properly situated in the vessel, the laser is then turn on. After which, the laser fibre is slowly pulled out of the vein. Essentially, the laser produces enough heat to close the vein for good. Once the main varicose vein is closed off forever, the smaller veins – which are also damaged – will close-up, shrink and disappear. The main varicose vein is ultimately transformed into scar tissue by the body, eventually getting absorbed. After the varicose vein is properly closed down and no longer letting blood through, blood is easily re-routed to and through the healthy veins.
